Am 28. Februar hatte der Tanker MT Princess Express bei rauer See Probleme mit dem Motor.

Der Tanker, der 800.000 Liter Industriekraftstoff geladen hatte, sank auf den Meeresgrund.

Das ausgelaufene Öl erreichte die philippinische Insel Mindoro und verschmutzte deren Strände. Viele Menschen versuchten, die Strände zu säubern, aber als sie das taten, brachte das Meer noch mehr Öl mit.

Die Behörden gaben bekannt, dass sie den Tanker in 366 Metern Tiefe vor der Provinz Oriental Mindoro geortet haben. Wissenschaftler sagten, dass etwa 36.000 Hektar Korallenriffe, Mangroven und Seegras in Gefahr sein könnten.
