Brazil’s ex-president goes to prison – level 3

16-09-2025 07:00

Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for plotting a military coup after losing the 2022 election.

Supreme Court justices ruled that Bolsonaro, a former army officer, tried to destroy democracy by getting back to power. Judge Alexandre de Moraes said Bolsonaro led a criminal organisation that sought to return Brazil to dictatorship between 2021 and January 2023, when his supporters stormed government buildings in Brasília. Four of five judges voted to convict him, while one argued there was insufficient proof. Several of Bolsonaro’s allies, including ex-defense ministers and close aides, were also convicted.

The verdict sparked celebrations among Bolsonaro’s opponents, who see it as justice for years of attacks on democracy, the environment, and minorities. But supporters denounced the trial as political. US officials, including Donald Trump, criticized the ruling, while Brazil’s government rejected foreign pressure. Experts warn that Bolsonaro’s political movement remains alive, and his allies may still try to overturn the conviction or push for amnesty in the future.
