Swiss supercomputer – level 2
26-05-2025 07:00
Lugano in Switzerland has a supercomputer called Alps, which is much stronger than a normal laptop.
Alps uses cold water from Lake Lugano to cool the machines and protect the environment. The water cools the computers and then returns to the lake. The supercomputer has many parts called blades, cooled by pipes with colors to keep track of them during maintenance. Alps helps scientists predict problems like rising sea levels and extreme weather by running computer models.
Near Alps is the Contra Dam, where scientists measure rain and snow. The supercomputer uses millions of data points and levels to study how the climate might change.
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Why are the pipes in Alps’ cooling system color-coded?
