Swiss supercomputer – level 3

26-05-2025 07:00

The Swiss city of Lugano is home to one of the world’s most advanced supercomputers, called Alps.

This supercomputer contains nearly 11,000 powerful processors, far stronger than a typical laptop. Alps operates sustainably by using cold water from Lake Lugano to cool down the machines, which produce a lot of heat. The water passes through heat exchangers and returns warmer to the lake without harming the environment. Each of the 2,688 computing blades inside has blue and red pipes for liquid cooling to avoid confusion during maintenance.

Alps helps scientists process large datasets to predict global issues such as sea level rise, glacier melting, and extreme weather events. It runs complex AI models that simulate how rising CO2 levels affect the planet. Near Alps is the Contra Dam, where data on heavy rainfall and snow are studied. Alps uses millions of data points and thousands of altitude levels to perform calculations impossible for normal computers, providing critical insight for climate science.

Why are the liquid-cooling pipes on each of Alps’s computing blades color-coded blue and red?
